Back in IndyCar’s Turbo V8 glory days, pre-split, we had former and a reigning F1 World Driver’s Championship title holders running not only the Indianapolis 500, but also the entire IndyCar season.

Mansell may be a little dry in his explanations, but they’re accurate and from a driver’s point of view. Clearly coming to grips with the oval racing was the biggest challenge for him, although his record would suggest otherwise as he would go on to win more oval races than street/road races, despite his road racing back ground.

Indy is pretty unique in that they do both road/street and ovals, and a reasonably well balanced mix at that, unlike NASCAR’s 30+ race format in a season that only has 2 road courses in the mix.

I would really like to see IndyCar back up to competing with the spectacle of Formula 1. I think it could with the right management.

I’ve always liked the raw looks of 90's Indycars in road Racing trim, with the larger wings and all. Same goes for Formula 1, up until the late 2000's there were some strikingly good looking cars on the grid. Nowadays, open wheelers just don’t look as good, I guess, even if for good reasons.

I wonder if there was ever a time when Indy/F1 regulations were compatible enough that cars could race in each other’s series.
